Los Angeles, CA (ContentDesk) August 13, 2005 -- There is no denying the continued popularity of cosmetic surgery and procedures: Americans are very interested in looking the best they can. As technology and surgical procedures improve, elective surgery has become a viable option for more and more people. Often, when people begin to consider cosmetic surgery they become interested in several procedures that would mean multiple operations. Now, as highlighted in many television shows, news segments and magazine articles, more people opt to combine procedures into one operation, saving costs and healing time periods as well as seeing the final results more quickly. While multiple procedures in one operation saved time and money, it was important to determine if there were drawbacks. Traditional surgical thinking believed prolonged anesthesia could increase risks or complications, but definitive data did not exist. Dr. Grant Stevens, director of Marina Plastic Surgery, began to study complication rates in hundreds of patients who underwent cosmetic surgeries in the last ten years to determine if "extreme" cosmetic surgery posed extra complication. The findings were impressive: there was no statistically significant increase in minor or major complications. The study involved 248 patients over a ten-year period. Each of the patients received abdominoplasty surgery from Dr. Stevens. The groups were divided into those who had abdominoplasty only, abdominoplasty with breast surgery, abdominoplasty with face-lift surgery, and abdominoplasty with both breast and face-lift surgery. While risks and complications are rare in surgery, they can happen and physicians always discuss adverse possibilities with their patients prior to surgery. Minor complications studied included seroma, hematoma, infection, and small wound infection. Major complications studied included bit was not limited to large flap necrosis, the necessity for blood transfusions, deep-vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolus, and myocardial infarction."No significant difference in morbidity or complication rates was found in the four different groups studied," said Dr. Stevens. "Plus, the study shows that combined procedures may yield higher patient satisfaction." Combined procedures allow patients to see their results more quickly and require less time off from work.Dr. Stevens is quick to point out that he is a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon with over 25 years of surgical experience. "This combination of procedures should only be done by surgeons with proper training and experience," says Dr. Stevens. "I recommend that patients insist on a surgeon with certification by The American Board of Plastic Surgery and hospital privileges to perform this surgery as a minimum requirement. I also recommend that the anesthesiologist be a Board Certified Medical doctor."In the past, each desired procedure would require a separate operation. This meant that the patient would need multiple periods of time off from work, multiple recovery periods, and multiple surgical costs. The final result could take months or a year to see. While patients would still be happy in the long run, there was a definite need to help simplify the process. Over the last 10 years, surgery has become safer and more efficient. In addition, patients are requiring less time in the hospital. The need for overnight stays began to decline and more patients are being released the same day as their surgery."There are many advantages to combining procedures. A single recovery period and reduced surgery costs are two examples, but the biggest might be faster patient gratification," said Dr. Stevens. "A changing medical environment in conjunction with the high patient demand really encouraged the advancements that made combined procedures possible. This study supports the safety of combined procedures performed by a Board Certified plastic surgeon."Dr. Grant Stevens is a California Board-Certified plastic surgeon and the Medical Director of Plastic Surgery Associates in Marina del Rey and Palos Verdes. He specializes in cosmetic plastic surgery and has been named one of America's Best Physicians in The Guide to Top Doctors. Dr. Stevens was nominated by his colleagues which makes this recognition especially prestigious and rewarding. He is an active member at Daniel Freeman Marina Hospital where he was the Chairman of the Department of Surgery for 6 years and the co-director of the Breast Center. He is also on staff at St. John's Medical Center and the Marina Outpatient Surgery Center. The report "Extreme" Cosmetic Surgery: A Retrospective Study of Morbidity in Patients Undergoing Combined Procedures was published in the July / August 2004 issue of Aesthetic Surgery Journal.
Society of Plastic Surgeons more than 52,000 body contouring procedures were performed for massive weight loss patients in 2003. These procedures include buttock lifts, thigh lifts, breast lifts, upper arm lifts and tummy tucks. "I am seeing an increase in demand for post-bariatric body contouring after weight loss", remarks board-certified plastic surgeon Douglas M. Senderoff, MD who practices plastic surgery in Manhattan and Westchester, New York. In addition, these patients may also be candidates for other cosmetic procedures such as liposuction and facelift due to the excessive amounts of sagging skin after tremendous weight-loss. According to Dr. Senderoff the surgery should be performed at around one year after the weight loss procedure or when the patient's weight is stable for at least 3 months.According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention 27% of Americans qualify as obese today as compared to only 15% in 1980. The National Institute of Health considers individuals with a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 40 or above to be morbidly obese. A BMI of 40 is equivalent to a 6 foot man weighing 294 lbs. This translates into roughly 6 million Americans with morbid obesity. Many Americans are undergoing surgical treatment for obesity including laparoscopic banding and gastric bypass surgery. Successful patients will lose around 100 lbs within 18-24 months of surgery. These patients are left with excess sagging skin requiring body contouring by qualified plastic surgeons. The American Society for Bariatric Surgery (ASBS) projects that more than 144,000 patients will have bariatric surgery in 2004 compared to the 103,000 and 67,000 patients who underwent gastric bypass surgery in 2003 and 2002, respectively. The ASPS predicts this increase in weight loss surgery will lead to a 36 percent increase in body contouring operations in 2004.At this time there is no clear answer whether post-bariatric surgical body contouring is medically necessary or cosmetic. Some insurers will provide coverage for the various lift procedures while others will deny coverage deeming the surgery as not medically necessary. Dr. Senderoff advises patients to check with their insurance company and ask whether their policy covers body contouring after weight loss. The insurance company will usually require medical notes and photos prior to authorizing surgery."The satisfaction rate after post-bariatric body contouring surgery is tremendous", says Dr Senderoff. "My patients are happy to get rid of all that extra skin after losing all their extra weight. It seems as if body contouring after weight loss or bariatric surgery is the icing on the cake for my clients."For more information, please contact:Park Avenue Aesthetic Surgery, PCDouglas M.
A new website available online at www.NippleRepair.com allows who are self-conscious or worried about their own nipple size and shape to explore surgical options for cosmetic correction."Most women do not realize how common it is to have inverted nipples," says Dr. Stevens. "At first they feel some relief that they are not alone. Then they usually get excited about the possibility of having their nipples corrected." Dr. Stevens's pioneered one approach to correct inverted nipples in which 100% of the treated patients have maintained their post-surgical nipple projection ? a drastic improvement over other techniques. Simple surgical procedures can also be performed on areolas that are too large and out of proportion with breast size as well as nipple that are too large or that project too much. Many women are not aware that these solutions are available, and instead live their lives feeling self-conscious or going out of their way to camouflage their bodies. Many women who are self-conscious about the size, projection or inversion of their nipples feel isolated, embarrassed or even worried about their ability to breastfeed. The poll allows people to both express their own idea of beauty as well as to realize that if they don't have the "perfect" nipples themselves, they are not alone. "The results after the nipple repair surgery are remarkable ? both physically and psychologically. Our patients report feeling more confident and comfortable with their bodies, often with a higher sense of freedom," explains Dr. Stevens. Inverted nipples can differ in severity. While some inversions can be "coaxed" out when aroused or cold, others are more densely inverted and can lead to infection, irritation and the inability to breastfeed. Most inverted nipples are congenital, though some nipples become inverted due to scar tissue forming after breastfeeding. Nipple repair can guarantee the nipple's ability to retain projection, but not all women will be able to breastfeed afterwards. Areolas and nipples that are too large or that project too much are also very common and respond very well to nipple reduction techniques. Marina Plastic Surgery offers surgeries to minimize size as well as nipple length.Dr. Grant Stevens is a board-certified plastic surgeon and the Medical Director of Plastic Surgery Associates in Marina del Rey and Palos Verdes, California. Plastic surgery is a branch of surgery that involves the repair or replacement of malformed, injured or lost members or tissues of the body. The plastic surgery has two more major branches: the reconstructive and the cosmetic surgery. These types of plastic surgery differ from one to another in one main way: the reconstructive surgery is made to help reconstruct an injured tissue or a birth defect while the cosmetic plastic surgery deals only with form or appearance.

I will now present a short history lesson about plastic surgery. Although plastic surgery goes far as Ancient Egypt, the first real plastic surgery doctors were two Sicilians: Gustav and Antonio Branka. They were father and son and they have managed to put the first brick on the plastic surgery wall by making basic guidelines which plastic surgeons should follow when doing a reconstructive nose surgery. The first man to actually create a center for Plastic surgery was another Italian: Taliakosi. But the main develop in plastic surgery was during the World War I and II because of the huge number of soldiers with body and facial disfigurations. Reconstructive plastic surgery has been in some cases able to correct these injuries and regain functional abilities of those parts of the body. From then to now it has been in a constant evolution catalyzed by scientific achievements. It is important to know that in the 80' plastic surgery had for many people a single meaning: breast enhancements.

This is why more and more women were asking for that kind of plastic surgery procedure. But really, plastic surgery is much more than that.

Nowadays, the plastic surgery is one of the most profitable businesses out there. Cosmetic surgery has now become more fashionable and it plays a great role in the mainstream. It is known that almost every Hollywood celebrity has used in some way plastic surgery.

In our modern society that puts a high price on an individual look, plastic surgery helps people getting a nice outward appearance along with self-confidence.

Dallas, TX (ContentDesk) April 12, 2006 -- Under pressure to increase tax revenue, a growing number of states across the US are considering a so-called vanity tax that would levy a sales tax on plastic surgery procedures.New Jersey has enacted a 6% tax on cosmetic procedures. Washington, Illinois and several other states are considering similar measures. In Texas, Governor Rick Perry has proposed expanding the state sales tax to include elective cosmetic surgery as part of an effort to boost school funding. But such taxes are a bad idea, says Dallas plastic surgeon Dr. Fred Hackney (http://www.hackney-plastic-surgery-clinic.com). While I can see how this might appeal to people, says Hackney, its based on a misconception that most plastic surgery is elective.Hackney says that any tax on plastic surgery would be unworkable because of the difficulty in determining what surgery really is elective and what is reconstructive.A procedure such as a rhinoplasty a nose job could be considered cosmetic, say Hackney, who specializes in such procedures, But what about cases where the surgery has functional aspects, such as when it helps the patient to breath better? Or what if the surgery is done to improve the patients appearance after a trauma?Situations such as these must be judged on a case-by-case basis, Hackney says. That makes it difficult for a state government to determine when the tax should and should not be applied.Hackney also takes issue with the proposed taxs implication that plastic surgery is a luxury item sought by people with a high disposable income. For many of our patients the cost of surgery represents a sizeable portion of their income, he says. This tax would hit many people who are already straining their resources. If New Jerseys experience is any indication, states may also fail to see the benefit they expect from the plastic surgery tax. While New Jersey legislators estimated their tax would generate $25 million in its first year, it raised only $7.8 million..In part thats because of the legislatures unfamiliarity with the industry, says Hackney, In part its because the tax simply pushed people toward out-of-state plastic surgeons. If you live in New Jersey, its easy to go to New York or Philadelphia for surgery. Hackney says any state considering a plastic surgery tax should expect residents to likewise go out of state for their surgery. This results in a significant loss of revenue for state hospitals. Plastic surgery involves anesthesiologists, nurses, and other professionals, all of whom are impacted, Hackney says.Indeed, after only 18 months on the books, New Jersey is already repealing its tax. On January 30, the original sponsor of the tax, Assemblyman Joseph Cryan, took the unprecedented step of calling for a repeal of his own bill.Thats a good sign that this experiment is a failure, Hackney says. About the Hackney Plastic Surgery ClinicDr. Fred Hackney is a noted Dallas plastic surgeon and one of the few plastic surgeons double board-certified in plastic and reconstructive surgery and oral and maxillofacial surgery. He performs a variety of procedures including rhinoplasty , face lifts, breast augmentation and liposuction. For more information visit http://www.hackney-plastic-surgery-clinic.com..

LOS ANGELES, CA March 10, 2004 ? Of the 8.7 million plastic surgery procedures performed in 2003*, one can only wonder how many of those consumers would have liked to have seen the expected results before their procedure was carried out. Now, BeautySurge.com, The Cosmetic Surgery Supersite, announces a new online service that allows visualization of potential beauty enhancing surgery without actually having to "go under the knife". By combining computer imaging with the skill and artistry of experienced cosmetic surgery specialists, digital imaging can simulate a variety of plastic surgeries including facelifts, breast implants, and liposuction, as well as non-surgical procedures such as Botox, collagen, and chemical peels. Cosmetic surgery imaging is an excellent tool to guide discussions with a surgeon and to help one decide whether to proceed with cosmetic surgery. A patient can take these morphed photos to the doctor and ask how the anticipated results from surgery might compare with the simulated pictures. "A few people see their photos and realize that the physical and financial expense of surgery wouldn't be worth the potential results," says Danya Hoenig, Physician Assistant and creator of BeautySurge.com. "But most people become more certain that they want their virtual surgery to become a reality."There are limitations to digital imaging, and Ms. Hoenig is careful to point out that it is not a guarantee of surgical results. "Plastic surgery imaging can provide a good idea of what one would look like after a particular procedure," explains Hoenig, "but it's not an exact replica. It's not about removing every bulge or wrinkle, but about producing a picture that mimics what could be achieved with surgery. However, individual variations among doctors' techniques and patients' anatomy create some differences with respect to the final surgical result."The cost for cosmetic surgery imaging ranges from $19 to $49 (USD) per procedure. Photos submitted to BeautySurge.com are digitally altered and returned within 2 business days via a private web address. If the number of plastic surgery procedures continues to increase at the current annual rate of 32 percent*, online plastic surgery imaging could help millions more communicate better with their surgeons and move forward with realistic expectations.BeautySurge.com provides consumers with in-depth information on the full spectrum of aesthetic surgery procedures, and connects those consumers with specialists to perform their desired services. The user's experience is enhanced with before and after photographs, message boards, personal stories, skincare, and recovery products and much more.*statistics provided by the American Society of Plastic SurgeryFor More Information Contact: Danya HoenigBeautySurge.comPhone: 310.839.5019Email: e-mail protected from spam botsWebsite: http://www.beautysurge.com/see/digital.html.

Dental care in Atlanta runs the whole gamut of services from general dentistry and pediatric dentistry to cosmetic dentistry. The new buzzword among dentists in Atlanta is smile designs. The Atlanta Center for Cosmetic Dentistry in Georgia was founded Dr. Debra Gray King offers a full range of dental services including cosmetic bonding, whitening, aesthetic gingivectomy procedures, gum contouring and porcelain.

The Center founded in 1987, has a full team of cosmetic dentists and aestheticians who treat, professional athletes, models, actors and beauty queens among others. Dr King, a Fellow in the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, is also an acclaimed instructor in cosmetic dentistry and Georgia's only accredited cosmetic dentist, one of 35 dentists the world-over. Her team includes Dr Richard Creasman, who specializes in smile makeovers with years of experience in cosmetic dentistry. Also on the team are Dr Shannon Waits, who has worked in public health dentistry and was a clinical director of a firm that specializes in accelerated whitening processes. Dr Louisa Berman has trained in prosthodontics, an area that includes restorative dentistry. The other member in the team is Dr Darrell Morton whose research involves dental materials and oral biology.

The equipment here is modern, and the facilities and treatment are first-rate. If you thought sitting in the dreaded dentist's chair or in a depressing waiting room would send shivers down your spine, some dentist clinics will come as a welcome surprise. They believe in dispensing cosmetic dental services in plush environments with special services like aromatherapy, manicures and even a batch of just-baked cookies. A visit to the dentist could actually be one you'd look forward to!.

Hernia surgery is a very simple surgery that succeeds in almost all cases. But doctors recommend parents not to delay their child's operation because some complications can appear in this situation. Next follow some useful facts about the surgery.

The operation lasts for about one hour and the child can return home the same day the surgery was performed. Overall the child must spend around five hours in the hospital, but if any complications appear at least one day of medical supervision is required.
No visible scars will remain on the child's skin because all the work is done under the skin. Also there are no stitches that need removing but there is going to be a covering tape over the incision, but it will fall or it can be removed after a few days from the surgery. In some cases dried blood gathers under the tape but that will also be gone.
At many children who suffered a hernia surgery the scrotum has swallowed a little and it was also bruised, but this is a normal side effect that disappears is a few weeks.

After one week or so regular activities can be performed again, but the child should not do any sporting activities, or to the gym class until the doctor says its ok to do that.
The child can go to school the second day after the operation but tell him not to do any activity that involves physical effort, in fact he should not lift anything that weights more than 10 pounds for four weeks from the surgery.
When it comes to bathing, a shower or a sponge bath can be done but only after 48 hours pass from the surgery. A normal bath cannot be done in the first five weeks that pass, but the child can bathe or swim freely afterwards.

Most of the children do not suffer from great pain after the surgery and almost everything returns to normal in a few days, but if any pain occurs he should take pain relievers. These are prescribed by the doctor who performs the surgery, in the case that pain appears.

In conclusion, hernia surgery does not have any dangerous side-effects, but if you suspect anything or if the child has a fever that does not drop, or an unusual bulge appears around the surgery scar, contact your doctor for further information..
